Funding for owner-operators

One truck, one business — money that fits how a single-truck operation runs.

An owner-operator is a complete business on ten wheels — and the money problems are the business's, not the truck's: fuel bought before the load pays, insurance due in lumps, a maintenance fund that is either real or borrowed from the future. Funding a one-truck operation is about smoothing that cycle, not adding debt to it.

The settlement cycle is the business

Everything runs on when settlements land versus when costs leave. Map one month honestly: fuel weekly, insurance monthly or quarterly, truck payment fixed, maintenance whenever it decides. The gaps between those and your settlement days are what funding should be aimed at — and what an underwriter reads in your statements anyway.

The maintenance fund, funded

The difference between a bad week and a lost authority is usually a repair fund. Where the fund is not there yet, a modest working capital facility can stand behind the truck while you build one — a tyre blowout or an aftertreatment fault handled today beats a truck parked until payday. Fund the repair, keep hauling, rebuild the reserve from loads.

Growing from one truck to two

The second truck is a different business: a driver, double the insurance, and a truck you are not sitting in. Before financing it, the first truck's numbers need to carry a bad month for both — see our semi truck financing guide for the purchase itself, and treat the driver's first months as a cost, not a profit centre.

The strongest expansion files show the first truck banking steadily with the account never dipping negative — the same discipline the second truck will need.

What a one-truck file needs

A business bank account that every settlement lands in — factoring or direct. Four months of it, out of overdraft. Authority and insurance current, and time under authority counted in months, honestly. Trucking is read carefully as a trade, so the tidy one-truck file beats the sloppy three-truck one more often than owners expect. Our trucking funding page covers how the file is read.
