Equipment financing for contractors

Excavators, trucks and attachments — own, finance or keep renting?

For a contractor, the equipment question is rarely whether the machine pays — it is whether to keep renting it. The crossover is measurable: when rental spend on a machine class approaches what a financed payment would be, ownership starts paying you, and the machine builds equity instead of receipts.

The rent-versus-finance crossover

Pull twelve months of rental invoices and total them by machine class. A mini excavator rented most weeks often costs more per year than financing one outright — as an illustration, steady rental at $3,000 a month is $36,000 a year against a machine that might finance for less and still be yours afterwards. Occasional and specialist kit stays rented; the machine on every job wants owning.

What financing covers on a job site

Excavators, skid steers, trucks and trailers, attachments, compaction and lifting kit — new or used, dealer or private sale, commonly up to 100% of cost through equipment financing. Used purchases from other contractors are routine; the machine is valued and the term matched to its remaining working life.

Terms that fit machines that work hard

Site machines age in hours, not years. A term stretched past the machine's real earning life leaves you paying for downtime — ask for total repayment in dollars and set the term against honest utilisation. Our guide to choosing an equipment financing company lists the questions that expose a bad deal before you sign it.

When the machine cannot wait

A blown final drive mid-job does not wait a week for asset finance. Revenue-based working capital lands in a day or two and can cover a repair or a fast replacement, at a higher cost that is often smaller than the standing time it prevents. Both numbers, side by side, decide it.

Keep a simple fleet ledger either way: purchase date, hours, repair spend per machine. It tells you which unit is next to fail before it does, and it doubles as exactly the utilisation evidence that makes term-length conversations easy.
